Saturday saw the start of the monthly Wellington Blues Club, This band never fail to impress and blew everyone away, a great night.

It was great to see Lee Wharton and the band again, they were in superb form and delighted the packed crowd at BJ’s.
I first heard them back in late May 2011 and I was very impressed then. Ann Batty on drums has grown from strength to strength and gave a succinct performance she just gets better and better.

Doug Long on bass guitar and electric double bass has been around for a while and is a very established musician, playing all styles
of music, but a true blues bassist now.

Lee Wharton on lead guitar and lead vocal has blues blood in his veins, a student of the Jimi Hendrix school for creative music.
The band started off in the same way they left it in May, Brilliantly! “Paranoid Love Blues” was their opening number which set the mood for the evening. Hendrix numbers “Hey Joe”, “Foxy Lady” and “Voodoo Chile” were exceptionally crafted by Lee.

Their album is available entitled “Fall Down” and is a great buy for any blues collection. This band from Preston has delighted crowds where ever they appear and is well worth a look .

Just a quick email to say thank you very much for a refreshingly original blues experience last night – I saw you at your gig in Burnley quite by accident as it turned out but I was so glad I did – I was stood for a short while with my back against the wall to your right, next to a seated elderly man – I was wrapped in a fleece to hide my suit because I was advised that a solicitor would not be a usual patron there at that time of night! Loved your expressive music and I will be buying your album – have you got an agent? If so, they need to step up your bookings for you!

Please don’t stop giving the blues a piercing voice!

Saw these guys live a few months back and they were superb. A cross between Hendrix and Robert Cray. will definitely be looking out for when they are playing live again. If you like the blues with balls then check them out

As I walked into the Bull’s, I realised immediately that this was not Robin, Pete, and Rick. I’m quick like that.

The first thing that got my attention was the guitar player and his lovely cherry finish Gibson 335. Last time I saw anyone doing things like that with one of those was when I saw Alvin Lee and Ten Years After. Anyone who has listened to my radio show knows I like a bit of Alvin…

The set consisted of a selection of cracking, well thought out covers of Hendrix, SRV, et al, played with flair and inventiveness, a couple of original tunes, and some old blues tunes that showed they know their onions. So good was this Preston trio that I stayed for their entire set, deciding I’d catch Steve Roux and The White Knuckle Blues Band’s Sunday set at The White Lion.

Some bands you see and you think, ‘Yeah, they are really good players.’ Others you see, you think that and then, you feel something more. That’s what ‘The Blues’ is, it’s a feeling and these guys have it. Oh yes, they surely do. For me, the biggest surprise of the weekend and one of the best bands I’ve seen in a while. Go see them!
